Transportation

Getting around Auckland is easy and affordable, whether you’re using public transport, driving, catching taxis and transfers, joining a tour, or even cycling.

Public transport – trains, buses and ferries

Auckland’s public transport is a great way to get around. It’s easy to travel by train, bus or ferry throughout the inner city and the wider region, with regular routes to most major attractions and our main shopping, dining and entertainment precincts.

Britomart, in downtown Auckland, is the main transport hub and is where many bus and train journeys start and finish. Ferries also arrive and depart from downtown Auckland, just two minutes’ walk from Britomart. A number of bus and train stations and some ferry departure points also have a park and ride facilities – ideal if you’ve got a hire car or you’re staying longer.

Find public transport services, maps and timetables at Auckland Transport’s AT journey planner. If you’re staying around Auckland for a while, consider buying an AT HOP card, a pre-pay smart card that can be used across buses, trains and ferries.

Please note: due to construction in the downtown area, some bus departure points have moved further uptown. Check the AT journey planner to make sure you’re at the right stop.

City Link buses

Our Link bus services are a convenient and cheap way to get around Auckland’s city centre and inner suburbs – including top shopping and dining spots. They run very frequently, so there’s no timetable, and fares start at just 50 cents. Just look for the red, green or amber buses and wait at a matching bus stop. Find out more

Driving – hiring a car, motorhome or motorbike

With an excellent motorway network, driving is a popular choice for anyone keen to discover more of Auckland and New Zealand. We’ve got lots of rental car companies to choose from – including the main international brands – offering everything from standard sedans and hatchbacks to motorhomes and motorcycles. Most major rental car companies have depots at Auckland Airport and in central Auckland.

In New Zealand, we drive on the left. Visitors from some countries may need a bit of adjustment, but for others, you’ll feel right at home.

You can legally drive in Auckland and New Zealand for up to 12 months per visit, with either a current driver's licence from your home country or an International Driving Permit (IDP). Make sure you have these organised before you arrive in New Zealand – check who can drive and what you’ll need on the NZ Transport Agency website.

We want you to be safe and stress-free while you’re exploring our beautiful part of the world. Take a look at our road rules for all types of vehicle at DriveSafe
